About Choco

When volunteers went to pick up Choco, he was tied to a stake in a dirt yard, lethargic, hardly able to breathe and with one of the highest parasite loads the rescue's vet had ever seen. But after three mouth surgeries, good groceries, and a gain of 400 pounds, he became a different horse. This approximately 8-year-old gelding, who looks like a Spanish Barb, is full of life and mischief. He loves to yank saddles and blankets off racks when no one is looking and he's as curious as a cat. Choco also loves his food, especially after-dinner apple and banana treats, and peppermints.

He was a stallion when he came into the rescue at age 6 and could not be gelded until he was healthy, which took about six months. Since his gelding was so late in life, it took about two years for him to settle down and lose most of his stallion habits. He tends to be a dominant horse, although at his foster home he is in the middle of the herd. He gets along pretty well with all the horses; however, the rescue has never put him with mares.

It took a long time for him to bond with fosters and he remains very wary of strangers, so it will take time to bond with him. But he gives his foster mom kisses on request. We believe he has been ridden before. He takes the saddle without complaint. We will soon be asking a trainer to evaluate him.
